UDHS PROGRAM OF STUDY--ORCHESTRA COURSES

Full Credit Elective Courses

ORCHESTRA HONORS Code No. 991 (Grades 9,10,11,12) – 5 Days Per Cycle
Prerequisite: Participation in a curricular musical ensemble in the previous year.
For the serious instrumentalist or vocalist, this course offers each student the opportunity for a more in-depth study of musical technique and style in performance, as well as increasing the student’s knowledge of more advanced music theory. Each student is expected to complete the quarterly course requirements set forth by each instructor. General requirements include the preparation of the audition material for the PMEA District 11 Festival, participation in an Upper Dublin-sanctioned musical organization beyond the curricular offerings and a performance as a soloist or in a small ensemble at a community or school function. Additional requirements unique to each musical discipline are available by contacting the appropriate instructor. (Approval Required for 9th grade).

SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA - Code No. 995 Grades (9,10,11,12)
5 Days Per Cycle
Symphonic Orchestra is intended for the instrumentalist who through a wide variety of repertoire, desires to refine his or her musical knowledge, individual technique and style playing of a stringed instrument. Symphonic Orchestra is a literature- centered, performance-based ensemble that presents evening concerts over the course of the year. Participation in these concerts is mandatory for all students.


Combination Courses
Combination courses are designed for the serious musician who wishes to study and perform with two or more musical ensembles. Each student is expected to fulfill all academic requirements for each of the ensembles.

SYMPHONIC BAND/ORCHESTRA – Code No. 945 (Grades 9,10,11,12)
5 Days Per Cycle
This course is designed to provide the student with an opportunity to participate in both Symphonic Band and Orchestra. The student will participate in Symphonic Band 3 periods/week and in Orchestra 2 periods/week. Additional sectional rehearsals will be scheduled on a rotating basis. Each student is responsible for all of the course requirements for both ensembles.
SYMPHONIC BAND/CHOIR/ORCHESTRA – Code No. 946 (Grades 9,10,11,12)
5 Days Per Cycle
This course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to participate in Symphonic Band, Concert Choir and Orchestra. The student will participate in Symphonic Band 2 periods/week and in Concert Choir 2 periods/week and in Orchestra 1 period/week. Additional sectional rehearsals will be scheduled on a rotating basis.
CONCERT CHOIR/ORCHESTRA – Code No. 947 (Grades 9,10,11,12)
5 Days Per Cycle
This course is designed to provide Orchestra students an opportunity to participate in music as a 5 period music major. The student will participate with the Concert Choir for 3 days and the Orchestra for 2 days per week. Additional sectional rehearsals will be scheduled on a rotating basis. Each student is responsible for all of the course requirements for both ensembles.

Partial Credit Elective Courses

ORCHESTRA – Code No. 992, 993 (Grades 9,10,11,12)
2 or 3 Days Per Cycle
The course of study in Orchestra is intended for the instrumentalist, who, through a wide variety of repertoire, desired to refine his or her musical knowledge, individual technique and style in the playing of a stringed instrument. Orchestra is a literature-centered, performance-based ensemble that presents evening concerts over the course of the school year. Participation in these concerts is mandatory for all students. Participation in Sophisticated Strings is not a requirement of the course.
